Entretien avec Michael Crafter (chant) Interview, traduction et édition par Sponge
Après avoir officié dans quelques très bonnes formations telles que Bury Your Dead, I Killed The Prom Queen ou encore Carpathian, le frontman Michael Crafter a décidé de monter un nouveau projet avec quelques potes, projet rapidement devenu le groupe Confession. En janvier 2012, Lifeforce Records nous proposera de découvrir le nouvel album du groupe intitulé The Long Way Home, un vrai album de metalcore actuel. Même si Confession n'apporte rien de neuf à la scène déjà plus que bien représentée de part le monde, les australiens jouent leur musique avec le coeur, et ça fonctionne plutôt bien. Alors que le groupe foulera les terres belges le 28 avril prochain lors du Groezrock Festival, nous avons posé quelques questions au chanteur, qui nous répond avec beaucoup de simplicité et de bonne humeur.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Tout d'abord, on n'est peut-être pas nombreux à connaître Confession en Belgique (peut-être en Europe ?), alors pourrais-tu nous raconter l'histoire de ton groupe ? D'où vient Confession, musicalement ?
Michael Crafter: Je m'appelle Michael Crafter, j'ai récemment chanté dans I Killed The Prom Queen, dans Bury Your Dead et dans Carpathian. En 2008, j'ai décidé de monter un groupe avec mon ami de longue date Dan Brown de 50 Lions. On voulait faire quelque chose de basiquement heavy, quelque chose bouge tout simplement. On a embarqué quelques gars avec nous et aujourd'hui, on a déjà sorti un EP et deux albums complets.
S: Justement, quand vous avez formé ce groupe, pourquoi avoir choisi de faire du metalcore ? Quelles sont les influences principales qui ont créé votre style ?
Michael: Je suppose que j'ai voulu monter ce groupe parce que je sais à quoi correspond ma voix. Je sais aussi sur quelle musique j'ai envie de me secouer la tête. On voulait avoir un son un peu à la Bury Your Dead, avec quand même un peu plus de couches rock. Donc Dan et moi nous y sommes mis ensemble, et c'est devenu exactement ce qu'on voulait.
S: Vous avez donc un nouvel album qui sortira le 3 janvier 2012, intitulé The Long Way Home ! Comment les gens qui ne vous connaissent pas encore devront-ils écouter ce disque ? Quel est le but de ce nouvel album ?
Michael: J'imagine que les gens pourront écouter tout ça en ligne sur le site de Lifeforce Records ou sur nos pages Facebook, YouTube, etc... [note: ce n'était pas vraiment le propos de la question LOL]. On est simplement un groupe de metal sur lequel vous pouvez bouger la tête et chanter les refrains avec nous. On est surtout influencés par les différents groupes dans lesquels on a joué auparavant. On voulait d'abord écrire un album pour nous-même et être sûrs que ce qui se trouverait dessus nous plairait à 100%.
S: Et pour vos fans qui ne vous connaitraient pas depuis le début, quelles sont les différences principales entre ce nouvel album et le précédent, selon toi ?
Michael: Il est plus lourd et à la fois plus rapide, plus agressif aussi. Et l'enregistrement est bien meilleur, puisqu'il a été fait par Frederick Norstrum en Suède.
S: Quelle est la signification de ce titre, The Long Way Home ? Et pourquoi avoir choisi d'illustrer la pochette de ce disque avec un avion qui attend le décollage ? Est-ce quelque chose de difficile pour vous de quitter l'Australie pour promouvoir le groupe, ou n'y a-t-il aucun lien entre cela et le titre de l'album
Michael: On quitte souvent la maison pour les vacances, le travail ou autre. J'ai beaucoup d'amis qui bossent loin dans les mines ou sur les plateformes de forage, et quitter les siens comme ça n'est jamais facile. Donc c'est effectivement le thème principal de cet album. On fait ce qu'on fait parce qu'on le doit, on bosse, on voyage, on visite chaque recoin de cette planète. C'est la vie. Voir le monde, voir ton pays, et voir toutes les choses autour de toi qui ne sont pas forcément ta maison. C'est dur, ça te manque, tes amis te manquent quand tu es loin. Mais la vie est aussi une expérience. Je voyage avec ce groupe aussi parce que j'aime ça, j'aime les concerts et j'adore chanter pour les gens. C'est ma voie pour le moment. La pochette de l'album parle de ça aussi, évidemment. En tournée, il nous arrive de connaître le meilleur, mais aussi le pire, mais hey, on fait quand même ce qu'on aime.

S: Y a-t-il une chanson que tu aimes en particulier sur cet album, et si oui, pour quelles raisons ? Une de ces chansons a-t-elle une histoire particulière ?
Michael: Je dirais « Asthma Attack ». Ca parle de la façon dont j'ai grandi, avec mes parents qui m'ont toujours soutenu et m'ont donné tout ce dont j'avais besoin pour devenir qui je suis aujourd'hui. Ma ville natale sera toujours là pour moi, ma famille et mes amis aussi, que j'aille bien ou pas. Ca parle du fait de se souvenir d'où on vient et de ne jamais l'oublier. La famille et les amis sont ceux qu'on devrait toujours aimer et respecter pour tout ce qu'ils font pour vous.
S: Il y a évidemment des milliers de bons groupes de metalcore sur cette putain de planète, alors que pourrais-tu nous dire à propos de ton groupe pour nous donner envie de l'écouter et d'apprécier votre musique ? En quoi Confession est-il différent des autres ?
Michael: La musique reste la musique. Si les gens ont envie de nous écouter, ils le feront. J'ai chanté pour trois très bons groupes par le passé. J'ai vu le monde tellement de fois, et j'adore ce que je fais ! Je n'essayerai pas de me vendre aux gens encore et encore. En écoutant Confession, tu reçois ce que tu veux, c'est lourd, furieux et mélodique. On n'est pas un groupe qui écrit de choses nouvelles que vous n'avez jamais entendues. On ne fait que jouer la musique qu'on aime.
S: En tant que groupe professionnel, comment ressentez-vous la différence entre l'époque où vous étiez jeune et que vous essayiez de composer de la bonne musique, et notre époque où vos albums fonctionnent bien et que vous êtes reconnus par les fans et les labels ?
Michael: Quand je chantais dans I Killed The Prom Queen, c'est arrivé tellement vite ! En deux, on parcourait déjà le monde entier. C'est dingue comme les choses peuvent se passer rapidement. Avec Confession, on a pris le temps d'écrire des choses, on n'avait pas cet impératif d'absolument partir en tournée etc... On ne se prend pas la tête pour tout ça, on laisse les choses venir à nous, en quelque sorte. On bosse avec des amis, notre manager est un de mes potes et notre label en Australie, c'est le même gars. La musique, c'est avant tout prendre du plaisir. Pour moi, jouer devant 5, 50 ou 5000 personnes, c'est la même chose. Tant qu'on peut monter sur scène avec le sourire et être heureux de jouer, c'est tout ce qui compte !
S: En avril 2012, vous viendrez en Europe pour une belle tournée avec Parkway Drive, Ghost Inside et Miss May I! As-tu déjà joué en dehors de l'Australie avec Confession, et qu'attendez-vous de cette série de concerts ?
Michael: Parkway Drive, ce sont mes meilleurs amis, en fait, donc j'adore tourner avec eux. On a aussi fait une tournée en Australie avec Miss May I cette année, et The Ghost Inside sont de vieux potes avec qui j'ai tournée quand j'étais dans I Killed The Prom Queen. Donc cette tournée sera terrible, j'en suis sûr !
S: Cette tournée passera par la Belgique le 28 avril au Groezrock Festival. Que connais-tu de notre pays ? As-tu déjà entendu parlé de la Belgique et de son public ?
Michael: Je connais des groupes comme Arkangel, Liar, Congress, Length of Time, et Goodlife Records aussi. J'ai grandi avec ce type de hardcore/metalcore. Quand j'avais 16 ans, Goodlige était un des seuls labels que je connaissais. Donc oui, je connais très bien votre pays. J'y suis venu quelque fois et je l'adore ! Je suis impatient d'être à ce festival.

S: Y a-t-il beaucoup de concurrences en Australie ? Votre scène nationale est-elle très représentée, ou est-ce que ça a été facile pour vous de vous hisser « au top » ?
Michael: Hum c'est difficile à dire. On a fait des concerts et fait notre truc dans notre coin. On se fiche un peu de la concurrence. C'est de la musique, pas du sport, tu vois. C'est très bien que notre pays ait une très bonne scène metalcore, car le soutien des fans est sans fin !
S: J'ai vu le clip que vous avez filmé pour la chanson « The Long Way Home », et j'ai été un peu déçu par quelque chose en partiulier. Je n'ai jamais posé cette question à aucun groupe, mais je sens que je dois le faire... POURQUOI suivez-vous la mode des groupes actuels qui sautillent sur scène et gesticulent dans tous les sens en jouant ?! On parle de metal les gars, pas de gymnastique !! LOL C'est un truc de guitariste, en général, mais pas mal de gens ici trouvent ça vraiment ridicule de sauter comme ça...
Michael: On vient de groupes de hardcore, on bouge parce qu'on en a envie. Mais on ne sautille pas tant que ça, en fait. On le fait surtout quand les riffs s'y prêtent. On a piqué pas mal de mouvement à Limp Bizkit, mais on déteste le truc des cheveux longs etc... mais pourtant j'en avais quand je jouais dans I Killed The Prom Queen ahahahahah.
S: Question rituelle sur Rock'N'Balls : quel serait ton Top 3 des meilleurs albums metal de tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
Michael: The Death de Mindsnare. C'est un groupe de hardcore australien qui m'a lancé dans la musique heavy. Ensuite Horizon de Parkway Drive. Ce sont mes meilleurs amis et je suis ce groupe depuis le début, évidemment, j'ai tournée et traîné avec eux. C'est un album qui signifie beaucoup pour moi. Et enfin Iowa de Slipknot. Ces gars sont malades... J'en ai dit assez ahahahah.
S: Eh bien, merci beaucoup Michael, pour cette interview ! As-tu un dernier mot pour vos fans et nos lecteurs ici en Belgique et partout ailleurs ?

After being part of some really good bands like Bury Your Dead, I Killed The Prom Queen or even Carpathian, the frontman Michael Crafter decided to form a new project with some mates, that quickly became the band Confession. In Janury 2012, Lifeforce Records will suggest us to discover the band's new record entitled The Long Way Home, a real actual metalcore album. Even if Confession doesn't bring anything new to this very well represented scene around the world, the Australian guys play their music from the heart, et works pretty well. As the band will walk on our country's ground next April 28th for the Groezrock Festival, we asked some questions to the singer, who answerd quite simply, in a good mood.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First of all, not a lot of us know Confession in Belgium (maybe in Europe?), so could you tell us what's the story of your band? Where does Confession come from musically?
Michael Crafter: My name is michael crafter i recentlty sang for i killed the prom queen, bury your dead and carpathian. In 2008 i decided to do a band with my long time friend dan brown from 50 lions. We decided to do something heavy and mosh bassicly. Got some mates on board and now we have released 1 ep and 2 full length albums.
S: When you formed the band, why did you choose to be metalcore? What are your main influences that created your style?
Michael: I guess i wanted to do this band cause i know what my voice suits. I know the music i wanna band my head to. We kinda wanted to have a sound like bury your dead's but have abit more of a rock feel to it as well. So yeh me and dan put our heads together and so far have come up with exacly we wanted.
S: So you have a new record coming out on January 3rd 2012, called The Long Way Home! For the people who don't know you yet, how will they have to listen to this record? What's the purpose of this new album?
Michael: I guess people jsut get online and listen to the tracks via lifeforces page or our facebook page, youtube etc. We are a mosh band with breakdowns u can bang your head to and singing parts that's are influenced by various rock band's we are into. We wanted to write a cd for ourselves and make sure we loved all the elements of it.
S: And for your fans who do know you from the beginning, what are the mains differences between this new record and the previous one, according to you?
Michael: Heavier, faster and more agressive. Better recording as it was done by frederick norstrum in sweden.
S: What's the meaning of this title, The Long Way Home? And why did you illustrate the cover of this disc with a plane waiting for the takeoff? Is it something difficult for you to leave Australia to promote the band, or is there no connection between that and the title of the record?
Michael: At various times we leave home for holidays, work and whatever else. I got lots of friends who work away in the mines or on oil rigs etc. Leaving your loved ones is never easy. So that's the main point to this album. We do what we do cause we have to. We work, we travel and we go to all kinds of parts of this earth.. That's what life is. Seeing the world, seeing your country and seeing thing's around u that isnt just your house, hard and whatever. You miss these things, you miss your friends while away. But life is about experience. I travel with this band cause i love it, i love shows i love singing to people. It's my path for now. The album cover, art etc fits with the meaning. This is a touring band we have the best of times on tour and the worst of times. But hey we are doing what we love.

S: Is there a song on this new record that you love in particular, and if yes, for what reasons? Does one of these songs had a special story writing or recording it?
Michael: Asthma attack. It's about growing up with parents who supported me and gave me everything i needed to be who i am. My home town will always be there, my family and friends also. They will stick with me whenever i need it. When im sick or what not. It's about knowing where u come from and be stoked on that. Your family and friends are the people who should appreciate and love and respect them for everything they helped u become..
S: There's obviously thousand of good metalcore bands on our fucking planet, so what could you say about your band to make us listen and appreciate your music? In what way is Confession different than the other bands?
Michael: Musis is music. If people are going to listen to us they will. I sang for 3 big band's in the past. I seen the world so many times and i love what i do. Im not going to try and sell myself to people over and over again. You get what u get when listening to confession. It's heavy, it's angry and it's melodic. We aint some new band writing new stuff u never heard before. We are just playing music we wanna play.
S: As a professional band, how did you feel the change between the time when you were some young guys trying to write some music and the time when your records became successful and when you've been very much in band by fans and labels?
Michael: When i was in prom queen it happened so fast in 2 years we were already touring the world. So it's nuts how things happen so fast. With this band we took time to write stuff and didnt have this huge goal to tour or whatever else. We just took stuff as it came to us. Didnt push it and didnt get upset when thing's didnt come our way. We work with our friends, our manegement is a mate of mine and our label in australia is the same guy. Music is about having fun. For me i could play to 5 people or 50 or 5000. It's all the same. As long as we walk of stage with a smile and happy how we played etc. Tha's all that matters.
S: In April 2012, you will hit Europe for a great tour with Parkway Drive, Ghost Inside and Miss May I! Did you every play outside Australia, and what are waiting for with these shows?
Michael: Parkway Drive as people are some of my best friends. So i just love touring with them. Miss may i did a tour with this year in Australia. The ghost inside are old mates who i toured with when iw as in prom queen. So it was great. This tour will be sick.
S: This tour will come to Belgium on April 28th for the Groezrock Festival, so what do you know about Belgium? Did you ever learn something about our country, and about its crowd?
Michael: I know arkangel, liar, congress, length of time and goodlife records. I grew up on this kinda metalcore. When i wsa like 16 goodlife was one of the only labels i knew. So yeh i know the country all to well. Been there a bunch and love it. Cant wai for this festival.

S: Do you have a lot of competitors in Australia? Is your national metal scene very much represented, or has it been something easy for you to come « to the top »?
Michael: Um hard to say. We just played shows and did our own thing. We dont really worry about competition. This is music it's not sport ya know. It's good that our country has such a strong metalcore scene. So the support is endless from the fans.
S: I've seen the video you filmed for the song « The Long Way Home », and I've been a little bit disappointed about one thing. I've never asked this question to a band till now, but I feel I need to do this... WHY do you guys just follow that fashionable style and jump up and down when playing?! We're talking about metal, not about gymnastics, guys!! LOL That's pretty a guitarist thing, but a lot of people here think this is ridiculous to jump like that...
Michael: We come from hardcore band's we move cause we want to move. We dont really jump around it time all that much. More so when it's bouncy bits. We kinda stole heaps of moves from limp bizkit. We kinda hate the whole pretty hair thing. I used to be fully into it when I was in prom queen. Hahahahaha
S: Traditionnal question on Rock'N'Balls: what would be your Top 3 best metal albums ever, and why?
Michael: Mindsnare's The Death. Australian hardcore metal band. Got me into heavy music. Parkway Drive's Horizon. My best mates and ive been with this band from the start, touring with them and just being around them. So it's a album that means lots to me. Slipknot's IOWA. Band is sick... Enough said hahahaha
