Décidemment, 2011 aura été l'année de Nuclear Blast en ce qui concerne la découverte de nouveaux groupes prometteurs ! Après Tasters et Texas In July, tous deux interviewés récemment sur Rock'N'Balls, c'est au tour de Like Moths To Flames de faire son apparition sur nos pages, afin de nous présenter son tout premier album intitulé When We Don't Exist, sorti il y a à peine un mois dans les bacs européens. Les américains, originaires de Columbus dans l'Ohio, pratiquent un metalcore moderne plein d'influences diverses, et ont la particularité de n'exister que depuis à peine un an et demi, et d'avoir déjà signé avec cette grosse machine metalienne qu'est Nuclear Blast ! On n'allait évidemment pas se gêner pour aborder le sujet avec Chris Roetter, le frontman du groupe, qui introduit sa formation à vos oreilles avec beaucoup de sympathie et d'humilité.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Tout d'abord, comment allez-vous les gars, alors que votre premier album est dans les bacs depuis un mois maintenant ? Très excités, je suppose ?
Chris Roetter: On ne pourrait pas êtres plus heureux. On a vraiment beaucoup bossé sur cet album, et je pense que ça se sent. On a attendu patiemment de pouvoir le publier, donc maintenant c'est cool d'en profiter.
S: Like Moths To Flames est un nouveau groupe assez jeune, originaire de l'Ohio, alors pouvez-vous le présenter à nos lecteurs ? Comment ce groupe est-il né, et quel est son but sur le plan musical ?
Chris: On a tous eu de la chance d'être dans des petits groupes locaux qui faisaient partie de la même scène musicale. Totallement par hasard, ces groupes ont stoppé leurs activités au même moment, et ça nous a amené à former Like Moths To Flames. Depuis le départ, on voulait jouer une musique qui nous semblait amusante, avec laquelle on prendrait du plaisir. C'est ce qu'on fait aujourd'hui.
S: D'où vient ce nom, Like Moths To Flames ? Et pourquoi l'avoir choisi à la base ?
Chris: En fait, ce nom n'a pas vraiment d'histoire, on a eu quelques soucis pour trouver un nom de groupe et on fouillait sur le web. On est tombés sur ces mots, « Like Moths To Flames », on s'est dit que ça sonnait bien et que ce serait un chouette nom pour représenter un groupe. Comme les papillons de nuit qui sont attirés par les flammes et la lumière, on est juste cinq gars attirés par la musique.
S: Like Moths To Flames est certainement le groupe le plus précoce que j'ai interviewé dans ma vie, puisqu'il a été créé en 2010 et que votre premier album vient de sortir il y a quelques semaines !! Comment expliquez-vous cette attirance aussi rapide des labels pour votre groupe (Rise Records pour les Etats-Unis et Nuclear Blast pour l'Europe) ?
Chris: Honnêtement, je serais incapable de l'expliquer. Ca m'a scotché dès le départ, mais c'est cool que des gens reconnaissent notre groupe comme ça. On est un groupe qui bosse beaucoup et on aime ça, en fait. C'est grâce à ces gens qui croient en nous qu'on continue à grandir. Avant ça, on a tous fait partie de groupes qui ont fait d'énormes erreurs. Avec celui-ci, c'est quelque chose qu'on ne VEUT PAS faire, on fait donc gaffe à faire les choses de la bonne façon, pour avancer dans la bonne direction.
S: Donc ce premier album s'intitule When We Don't Exist est officiellement dans les bacs depuis le 8 novembre dernier ! Peux-tu nous dire pourquoi vous avez choisi ce titre et ce qu'il signifie pour vous ?
Chris: Cet album est une opportunité pour moi de dire beaucoup de choses que je voulais exprimer. Essayez d'imaginer un monde où tout ce avec quoi on a dû faire jusque maintenant n'existerait pas, eh bien cet album parle de cela de mon point de vue. Une vie sans religions, sans famille, sans foi, sans amis, etc...
S: Avec quel producteur avez-vous travaillé pour l'enregistrement et le mixage de ce premier disque, et comment vous y êtes-vous pris pour faire un choix ? N'est-ce pas justement difficile d'aller dans la bonne direction lorsque le groupe est encore si jeune ?
Chris: On a eu l'opportunité de travailler avec le producteur Will Putney du Machine Shop. C'est quelque chose dont on a beaucoup discuté, mais on ne pourrait pas être plus heureux du choix qu'on a fait. C'était une étape très importante pour notre groupe d'enregistrer, mais je pense qu'on l'a très bien fait. Will a vraiment aidé Like Moths To Flames a trouver un son qui nous définissait.

S: Si on devait écouter trois chansons tirées de ce premier album pour se faire une bonne idée de qui est Like Moths To Flames, lesquelles nous conseillerais-tu, et pourquoi ?
Chris: je dirais « You Won't Be Missed », « GNF » et « Trophy Child ». Chacune de ces chansons donne une idée différente de ce que le groupe est capable de faire, ça va d'une chanson très heavy à des choses plus pop.
S: Y a-t-il un morceau sur ce disque qui aurait une histoire particulière ? Peut-être un titre qui a été très difficile à enregistrer en studio, ou des paroles qui signifie quelque chose de très spécial pour l'un d'entre-vous ?
Chris: « Trophy Child » est une des chansons les plus personnelles que j'ai jamais écrites. J'avais un meilleur ami, et on s'est brouillé de façon très négative. Cette chanson est ma chance de vider mon sac à propos de cette histoire.
S: Même si votre groupe est répertorié comme metalcore, il y a beaucoup d'influences modernes dans votre musique ! Ca sonne vraiment metal à la sauce 2011. Quelles sont vos influences principales en metal et même en musique en général ?
Chris: On a tous des influences différentes qui ont façonné ce groupe. Ca va de groupes comme Behemoth à Man Overboard. Je pense que ça aide notre musique et notre son à rester frais et moderne, effectivement.
S: Votre biographie officielle dit que votre musique a tout ce qu'un gamin a envie d'entendre : des breaks énormes et des refrains monumentaux. Etait-ce votre but premier de créer une musique directe et compacte qui parle aux plus jeunes, ou avez-vous juste laisser venir la musique comme vous la sentiez ?
Chris: Elle est plutôt venue naturellement. On a pris en considération la façon dont on voulait présenter ces morceaux en live, mais sinon on a simplement composé ce qu'on trouvait juste pour notre groupe. Evidemment, on savait qui on avait envie de toucher avec notre musique, mais on a surtout écrit un album dans lequel chacun d'entre-nous se retrouve.
S: J'ai trouvé sur YouTube ce qui semble être un clip vidéo « officiel »
qui illustre la chanson « Your Existence ». C'est une vidéo très simple en live, formée de plans serrés et d'images de fans. Quelle était votre envie avec cette vidéo ? Tu ne peux pas répondre que c'était pour présenter le groupe, car on on vous voit à peine dans ce clip...
Chris: Un de nos amis proches nous a proposé de faire cette vidéo pour le groupe, gratuitement. Et on n'avait pas envie de refuser une telle proposition. Je pense que ce clip montre simplement qu'on est un groupe énergique, qui prend du plaisir en live, on voulait que les gens comprenne d'abord cela.
S: En ces mois de november et décembre 2011, vous faites partie du Thrash And Burn Tour, avec des groupes comme Winds of Plague, Chelsea Grin, As Blood Runs Black, For The Fallen Dreams, In The Midst Of Lions et Volumes. Cette tournée parcourera tous les Etats-Unis, alors y a-t-il des endroits où vous avez particulièrement envie de jouer, et si oui, pour quelles raisons ?
Chris: C'est la première fois qu'on a eu la chance de jouer sur la côte ouest des Etats-Unis. C'est quelque chose qu'on avait envie de faire depuis toujours, car on n'avait fait que des tournées régionales depuis les débuts du groupe. Le Thrash And Burn nous a permis de jouer dans pas mal de lieux qu'on n'avait jamais visité, et c'était génial. On a pu rencontrer des nouveaux fans qui nous suivaient pourtant depuis la naissance de Like Moths To Flames.

S: Quels sont les plans pour le groupe après cette tournée américaine ? Pensez-vous venir jouer en Europe, et plus particulièrement chez nous en Belgique ?
Chris: On n'a pas encore de plans définis, mais beaucoup de choses se préparent. On veut d'abord voir un peu comment les gens réagissent à l'album avant de tirer des plans sur la comète. On a entendu parler d'un plan pour amener Like Moths To Flames en Europe, oui, et j'espère que ça se révélera possible.
S: Y a-t-il un groupe avec lequel vous rêvez de tourner, et si oui, lequel et pourquoi ?
Chris: Architects, c'est un des mes groupes préférés. Ils m'ont vraiment influencé à jouer ce type de musique, donc ce serait vraiment cool de jouer avec eux.
S: Question rituelle chez Rock'N'Balls : quel serait ton Top 3 des meilleurs albums de metal de tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
Chris: Parkway Drive – Horizons; Architects - Hollow Crown; Molotov Solution – Insurrection. J'ai juste choisi trois albums que j'adore écouter, peu importe le nombre de fois que je les ai déjà entendus. Ce sont des albums qui ne se démodent pas, selon moi.
S: Eh bien, merci Chris pour cette interview, on a été enchantés de découvrir Like Moths To Flames avec ce très bon premier album ! As-tu un dernier mot pour vos fans et nos lecteurs ici en Belgique et partout ailleurs ?
Chris: S'il vous plait, achetez notre album, je pense qu'il est assez prometteur pour les gens qui aiment la musique heavy, et je crois qu'il représente très bien notre groupe.

2011 has certainly been the Nuclear Blast year as far as we talk about discoring some new talented bands! After Tasters and Texas In July, who both have recently been interviewed on Rock'N'Balls, it's Like Moths To Flames turn to appear on our pages, to introduce their very first record entitled When We Don't Exist, which has been released just a month ago in the European music shops. The American guys from Colombus, Ohio, play modern metalcore with a lot of different influences, and have the particularity to exist just for one year and an half and to already be signed on this huge metallian machine that is Nuclear Blast! We couldn't care about approaching the frontman of the band, Chris Roetter, who's introducing its formation to your ears with a lot of sympathy and humility.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First of all, how are you guys doin' for the moment, as your first record is out for a month now? Pretty excited, I suppose?!
Chris Roetter: Couldn't be happier. We put a lot of hard work into the record and I think it shows. We've been patiently waiting to release it, so it's great to have it out finally.
S: Like Moths To Flames is a brand new fresh band from Ohio, so can you introduce yourself to our readers? How did this band born, and what is its musical purpose?
Chris: We all had the chance of being in local bands that were a part of the same music scene. Coincidentally enough those bands ended around the same time, leading us to form LMTF. From the start of the band, we wanted to play music that was fun to us, something that we could enjoy. That's what we're doing.
S: Where does this name « Like Moths To Flames » come from, and why did you choose it?
Chris: Actually not much of a story, we had some issues finding a band name and were fumbling around online. We came across 'Like Moths To Flames' and thought it was great and would be an awesome name to represent our band. Like moths are drawn to flames or light, we are just five guys drawn to playing music.
S: Like Moths To Flames is probably the most precocious band I've interviewed in all my life, 'cause it's been created in 2010, and your first full length record is gonna be released in some days now!! How do you explain this fast attraction by the labels (Rise Records for the United States, and Nuclear Blast for Europe!) for your band?
Chris: Honestly, I can't explain it. I've been baffled by it from the start but it's great that people back it. We're a very hard working band and we like it that way. The people who back our band are what continues to help us grow. We've all been in bands before that have made awful mistakes. With this band that's something we DIDN'T want to do so we made sure to do everything the way we thought it should be done, in order to progress in a forward direction.
S: So this first record is called « When We Don't Exist » and will be officially out on November 11th! Can you tell us why you chose this title and what it means for you guys?
Chris: The record is my chance to say a lot of things I wanted to be said. Imagine a world if all the stuff we have dealt with didn't exist, our record helps to explain that from my point of view. A life without religion, family, faith, friends, etc...
S: Who did you work with as a producer for the recording and mixing of this first disc, and how did you make your choice? Isn't it difficult to make the right choices when the band is so young?
Chris: We had the opportunity to work with producer Will Putney at Machine Shop. It was something that we debated a lot about, but couldn't be happier with the choice we made. It was a big step for our band to record but I think we took the correct step. Will helped the band grow a lot and really find a sound that defined the band.

S: If we had to listen three of the songs on this first record to have a good idea of what is Like Moths To Flames, which songs would you recommand to us, and why?
Chris: I would say You Won't Be Missed, GNF and Trophy Child. Each song kind of gives you a different idea on what the band is capable of doing, from the heavy songs to the pop songs.
S: Is there a song on this album that has a particular story? Maybe a song that's been really difficult to record in the studio, or some lyrics that mean something very special for one of you?
Chris: Trophy Child is one of the most personal songs I've ever written. I was best friends with someone for years and had a bad falling out. This song is my chance to get a lot of stuff off my chest.
S: Even if your band is considered to be metalcore, there are a lot of modern influences in your music! It sounds really like 2011 metal shit! What are your main influences in metal and music in general?
Chris: We all have different influences that bring us to the band. Bands from Behemoth to Man Overboard. I think it helps to keep a fresh twist to the sound of our music.
S: Your official biography says that your music has everything a kid wants to hear: huge breakdowns and monumental choruses. Was it your main purpose to create direct and compact music for kids, or did you just let the music come out, as you felt it?
Chris: The music just came out as it came out. We took into consideration how we would portray these songs live, but other than that, we just wrote what we thought was right for our band. I mean obviously we knew what crowd of kids we wanted to reach, but we wrote a record that we all backed musically.
S: I've found what seems to be an "official" video on YouTube, illustrating the song "Your Existence". That's a simple live video, consisting of close camera shots and fans images. What was your desire with this first video? You cannot say it's meant to introduce the band, 'cause we just can barely see you guys on this one...
Chris: One of friends from home offered to do the video for our band, for free. That's an offer we didn't want to pass up on. We think the video displays that we are a fun energetic live band and wanted people to be able to grasp that.
S: This November and December 2011, you're part of the Thrash And Burn Tour, with bands like Winds of Plague, Chelsea Grin, As Blood Runs Black, For The Fallen Dreams, In The Midst Of Lions and Volumes. You will be touring all around the United States, so is there some places where you're really eager to play, and if yes, for what reasons?
Chris: This is the first time we have had the chance to play the west coast. It's something that we've always wanted to do, because we've done regional tours for almost the entire life of the band. Thrash and Burn gave us the opportunity to hit a lot of markets we've never played before and it's awesome. It gives us the chance to meet new fans and some fans that have been with us since the beginning.

S: What are the plans for your band after this American tour? Do you plan to tour over Europe and particularly in our country of Belgium?
Chris: No definite plans yet but a lot of things are up in the air. We want to see how people take hold to the new album before we lock in a bunch of plans. There have been some talks of LMTF coming to Europe and I hope that's something that's possible.
S: Is there a band that you'd really love to tour with, and if yes, which one and why?
Chris: Architects, they are one of my favorite bands. Influencing me to play this style of music, so it'd be great to have that opportunity.
S: Traditionnal question on Rock'N'Balls: what would be your Top 3 best metal albums ever, and why?
Chris: Parkway Drive – Horizons; Architects - Hollow Crown; Molotov Solution – Insurrection. I just chose three albums that I love to jam, no matter how many times I hear them. They are just 3 albums that don't get old to me.

Chris: Please buy the new record, I think it's very promising for people who like heavy music & I think it's a great representation of our band.
