Entretien avec Tommy Antonini (guitare) Interview, traduction et édition par Sponge
Il semble qu'en 2011, Nuclear Blast ait décidé de se spécialiser dans le coup de pouce envers les jeunes groupes prometteurs. Après avoir sorti deux albums restés relativement underground, les italiens de Tasters se sont vus offrir un contrat professionel pour la sortie de leur nouvelle plaque intitulée Reckless Till The End, qui pourrait bien faire parler d'elle sur la scène internationale, tant la qualité de leur musique est impressionnante. Alliant subtilement leurs influences diverses, de Periphery à Architects en passant par The Devil Wears Prada, ce groupe arrive à créer sa propre musique sur fond de metal moderne et ascéré, qui ne vous laissera forcément pas indifférents. Actuellement en tournée en compagnie de Texas In July, autre jeune signature du label, le guitariste Tommy Antonini a accepté de répondre à nos questions pour nous faire découvrir leur musique.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Alors, comment va Tasters en ce moment ? Vous êtes apparemment en tournée avec Texas In July, qu'avez-vous vécu sur la route ces derniers jours ?
Tommy Antonini: Eh bonjour ! Ouais, on est sur la route, et partager ça avec Texas In July, c'est une belle expérience. C'est gars sont terribles et on est très contents de tourner avec eux.
S: Tasters existe en tant que groupe depuis 1999, vous avez publié deux albums avant celui-ci, mais peu de gens vous connaissaient avant aujourd'hui, en fait ! Peux-tu nous dire d'où vient votre groupe, et pourquoi penses-tu que le succès commence seulement à pointer son nez ?
Tommy: Comme tu l'as dit, le groupe est né en 1999, mais c'est seulement ces dernières années qu'on a connu un changement radicale de mentalité, on a commencé à tourner à l'étranger et à faire les choses plus sérieusement. On pense que quand tu veux quelque chose vraiment, et que tu vis pour ça, les résultats viendront d'eux-même.
S: Sur le site web de Nuclear Blast, dans la section « line-up » de la page de Tasters, il n'y a aucun bassiste dans la liste ! Est-ce que vous jouez sans bassiste, ou est-ce simplement une erreur du label ?
Tommy: Ouais, je sais. Ce n'est pas une erreur, c'est juste qu'on a changé de bassiste il y a quelques semaines, juste avant le shooting photo, et on a décidé de ne pas le mettre sur les photos du nouveau line-up. Mais je suis sûr que sur les prochains, nous serons à six.
S: Pour ce nouvel album, vous avez donc signé un deal avec ce label renommé qu'est Nuclear Blast ! Que penses-tu que cela va changer pour Tasters en tant que groupe de bosser avec des professionnels comme eux ?
Tommy: Je pense que c'est seulement le début de notre carrière. On fait maintenant partie d'une équipe très professionnelle, qui bosse très dur pour nous, et ça marche dans les deux sens, car on essaye de faire le maximum pour que tout le monde soit content.
S: Ce nouvel album s'intitule Reckless 'till The End. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce titre, et que signifie-t-il pour le groupe ?
Tommy: En fait, ça signifie que si tu crois en quelque chose, et que tu bosses toujours d'arrache-pied, tu atteindras ton but. Ne jamais renoncer et toujours suivre sa passion.
S: Avec quel producteur avez-vous travaillé pour réaliser ce nouveau disc, et aviez-vous une idée, en entrant en studio, de ce à quoi cet album devait ressembler une fois terminé ?
Tommy: L'album a été produit par notre chanteur et ingénieur du son au Adrenaline Studio à Livourne (Italie). On recherchait un son à la fois moderne et très sombre, et je pense qu'on a atteint cet objectif, car on aime vraiment beaucoup la façon dont il sonne.
S: Penses-tu qu'avoir travaillé avec lui derrière la table de mixage a été bénéfique pour le groupe ? Penses-tu qu'il ait apporté quelque chose de plus à votre musique par cette contribution ?
Tommy: Bien sûr, quand quelqu'un dans le groupe possède un studio d'enregistrement professionnel et sait comment travailler dans ce domanie, c'est très bénéfique. On pouvait changer ou réarranger les chansons autant de fois qu'on le désirait et on a pû sélectionner onze titres sur plus d'une vingtaine.

S: Votre music est vraiment multistyles, avec des riffs lourds à la Meshuggah mais aussi de très beaux refrains mélodiques. Quelles ont été vos influences principales lors de la création de ces nouveau morceaux ? Vous êtes-vous laissés influencer par d'autres groupes, ou essayez-vous de faire votre propre truc sans écouter les autres ?
Tommy: Bien sûr, on a tous nos influences, mais en même temps on voulait effectivement création notre propre son, en essayant d'être le plus original possible. Mais si je devais citer les groupes qui ont le plus influencer notre travail, je pourrais dire Architects,The Devil Wears Prada, Periphery et Bring Me The Horizon.
S: Vous avez récemment publié un clip pour illustrer votre premier single qui s'appelle « Please Destroy This World » et selon moi, cette chanson est le parfait exemple pour bien découvrir Tasters ! Parce qu'elle est à la fois très dure et très entraînante ! Peux-tu nous dire de quoi parle ce morceau, et pourquoi vous l'avez choisi comme single ?
Tommy: Ce titre parle de combattre la corruption et le Mal de ce monde. Si on peut détruire ce monde, on peut détruire toutes les choses négatives et recommencer, peut-être dans un monde meilleur. Comme tu le disais, on trouvait que cette chanson nous représentait parfaitement, car elles est lourde, sombre et mélodique.
S: Est-ce que votre style de musique est beaucoup représenté sur la scène italienne, et avez-vous beaucoup de concurrents dans votre pays ? Trouves-tu que vous avez dû vous battre durement pour arriver en haut de la liste ? Ou est-ce que ça a été un jeu d'enfant ?
Tommy: La scène italienne est assez pauvre en fait, il y a quelques bons groupes, mais on ne se considère pas comme étant en haut de la liste, c'est seulement sur le papier qu'on fait partie des trois ou quatre groupes italiens qui sont signés sur un gros label, mais on reste les pieds sur Terre, et on continue à bosser dur pour grandir jour après jour.
S: Dans votre pays, vous avez ouvert pour beaucoup de bons groupes comme Cancer Bats, 30 Seconds To Mars, Sonic Syndicate, Evergreen Terrace, Terror, Aiden et plein d'autres. Quel est votre meilleur souvenir en première partie d'un de ces groupes?
Tommy: C'est toujours super de jouer avec des groupes confirmés, car on peut apprendre beaucoup de choses et affronter la scène d'une façon différente. Je pense que notre meilleure expérience a été de tourner avec Bleed From Within en Grande-Bretagne, c'est un super groupe et des gars très sympas.
S: Depuis décembre 2009, vous tournez donc à l'étranger en première partie d'autres groupes mais aussi en tête d'affiche comme en février et mars 2010. Vous avez également joué trente concerts en Russie, et êtes comme cela devenu le groupe étranger qui a joué le plus de concerts sur le territoire de l'ex-URSS, vous créant un bon paquet de fans dans cette région. Quel genre d'expérience était-ce pour vous de tourner là-bas ? Est-ce que ça a aidé Tasters à grandir encore un peu plus ?
Tommy: Ca nous a clairement aidé. On a compris ce que c'était que la vie sur les routes, on a d'excellents souvenirs de cette tournée, c'était une expérience extraordinaire. Après avoir tourné en Russie et en Sibérie, je crois qu'on pourrait tourner n'importe où. Ceux qui connaissent les routes russes et le temps qu'il fait là-bas comprennent ce que je veux dire (rires).

S: Puisque vous jouez en ce moment en Europe avec Texas In July, quelles sont les réactions de vos fans à l'écoute des nouvelles chansons ? Penses-tu que leur passion pour vous a grandi en même temps que vous depuis que vous avez visité ces pays ?
Tommy: Définitivement. Lors de la plupart des concerts, des gens viennent nous voir et chantent avec nous. On vend beaucoup de merchandising et on est très heureux de la façon dont ça se déroule.
S: Quels sont les plans pour le futur proche de Tasters, après cette tournée européenne ?
Tommy: On attend les confirmations de quelques autres tournées, car on a évidemment besoin autant que l'on peut pour promouvoir notre nouvel album et notre musique.
S: Question rituelle chez Rock'N'Balls : quel serait ton Top 3 des meilleurs albums metal de tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
Tommy: Soilwork – Stabbing The Drama; Deftones – White Pony; Metallica – Black album. Je pense que ces trois albums ont été trois révolutions dans nos vies et nous ont introduits à différents horizons musicaux.

It seems that in 2011, Nuclear Blast decided to specialize in helping the young promising bands. After releasing two records that stayed relatively underground, the Italian guys of Tasters just signed a professional deal to release their new record called Reckless Till The End, which people on the international scene will probably talk a lot about, as the quality of their music is impressive. Subtly combining their diverse influences, from Periphery to Architects or even The Devil Wears Prada, this band succeed in creating its own musique based on modern and sharped metal, that will probably not let you indifferent. Currently on tour with Texas In July, another young singature from the label, the guitarist Tommy Antonini accepted to answer to our questions to make us discover their music.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First of all, how is Tasters doing these days? You're apparently on tour with Texas In July, so what did you experience these last days on the road?
Tommy Antonini: Hello there ! Yeah, we are on the road right now and sharing this tour with Texas in July is a great experience. Those guys are awesome and we're so happy to tour with them !
S: Tasters is a band since 1999, you've released two records before this new one, but not a lot of people knew about you before today! Can you explain us where does the band come from, and why you think your success is only coming now and not before?
Tommy: The band,as you said, was born in 1999 but only in the last years there's been a radical change of mentality, we started touring abroad and doing things more seriously. We think that if you want something and you live for that, the results will come.
S: On the Nuclear Blast website, in the lineup section of the Tasters page, there's no bass player listed! Do you play without bass player, or is it just an error from the label?
Tommy: Yeah i know. I'ts not an error, it's just that we changed our bass player just some weeks before that photoset and we decided not to put him in the new lineup photos.
I'm pretty sure that in the new photos we will be in 6.
S: For this new record, you've signed a new deal with renowned label Nuclear Blast! What do you think it will change for Tasters as a band to be working with such professionals?
Tommy: This is just the beginning of our career i think. We are now part of a very professional team, working hard for us and in the meantime we try to give our best to make everyone happy.
S: This new album is called Reckless 'till The End. Why did you choose this title, and what is its meaning for the band?
Tommy: It basically means that if you believe in something, and you work hard always you can reach your goal. Never give up and always follow your passion.
S: Who did you work with as a producer to realize this new disc, and did you have some precise ideas about how this record should sound before entering the studio?
Tommy: The album has been produced by our singer and sound engineer at the Adrenaline studio in Livorno. We were looking for a modern and very dark sound, and hopefully we reached this result, as we really like the way it sounds.
S: Do you think that working with him behing the mix table has been beneficial for the band? Do you think he brang something more to your music by this contribution?
Tommy: Of course, when someone in the band has a professional studio and knows how to work with the recordings, it's a lot beneficial. We could change and rearrange songs everytime we wanted and we selected 11 songs on more than 20.

S: Your music is really full of styles, with heavy riffs like Meshuggah stuff but also great melodic choruses. What has been your main influences as you were creating this new music? Did you let yourself being influenced by other bands, or do you try to make your own thing without listening to other ones?
Tommy: Of course we have some influences, but in the same time we wanted to make our own thing, trying to be more original as possible. If i have to name the bands which influenced our work more, i can say Architects,The Devil Wears Prada, Periphery and Bring me the Horizon.
S: You've recently released a video to illustrate your first single called « Please Destroy This World » and to me, this song is really the perfect one to discover Tasters in the right way! 'cause it's at the same time heavy and melodically catchy! Can you tell us what does this song speak about, and why you personaly chose it as the first single?
Tommy: This song speaks about fighting the corruption and the evil of the world. If we can destroy this world we can destroy all these bad things and start again, maybe with a better world. We choosed this song as represented us perfectly as you just said, heavy dark and melodic.
S: Is your style of music very represented on the Italian scene, and is there a lot of competition in your country? Do you feel like you had to fight a lot to be on top of the list? Or has it been child's play?
Tommy: The italian scene is quite poor, there are some good bands and we dont consider us on top of the list, only on the paper we are one of the 3/4 italian bands signed with such a big label, but our feet are always moveless on the ground and we will work hard to grow everyday more.
S: In your country, you've opened for a lot of great bands like Cancer Bats, 30 Seconds To Mars, Sonic Syndicate, Evergreen Terrace, Terror, Aiden and some others. What is your best memory playing with a renowned band?
Tommy: It's always great to play with those kind of bands, you can learn a lot of things and face the stage in a different way. I think the best experience has been touring with Bleed from within in the UK, great band and great dudes.
S: From December 2009, you started touring outside Italy, hitting United Kingdom with the Scottish metalheads Bleed From Within, but also as headliners in February and March 2010. You've also been touring Russia for 30 shows, becoming the foreign band playing more shows in the ex-USSR territories and growing a huge fanbase in those areas. What kind of experience has it been for you to play in such countries? Did it helped Tasters to grow more and more?
Tommy: It definetely helped us. We understood how the life on the road is, we have great reminds of those tour and it was such an awesome experience. After touring Russia and Siberia, i think we can tour everywhere. Who knows Russian streets and weather can understand what i mean (laughs)

S: As you are currently touring with Texas In July over Europe, what are the fans reactions to your new songs? Do you feel like the fans passions for Tasters has grown since the last time you came in these countries?
Tommy: Definetely. In a lot of shows there are people coming to see us and singing the song. We are selling a lot of merch and we are happy on how its going so far.
S: What are the plans for the near future of Tasters, after finishing this European tour with Texas In July?
Tommy: We are waiting for some other tours confirmation, obviously we need to tour as much as we can to promote our new album and music.
S: Traditional question on Rock'N'Balls: what would be your Top 3 best metal albums ever, and why?
Tommy: Soilwork – Stabbing The Drama; Deftones – White Pony; Metallica – Black album. I think these 3 albums are 3 different revolutions in our lives and introduced us to different musical landscapes.
