Entretien avec Ben Witkowski (basse) Interview, traduction et édition par Sponge
L'une des meilleures nouvelles signatures de l'année pour Nuclear Blast est sans doute celle qui a fait de Texas In July leur nouveau poulain ! Les cinq petits jeunes de Lancaster (Pennsylvanie) n'avaient pas encore réussi à faire parler d'eux avec leur premier album, I Am, sorti en 2009 sur CI Records, mais ce sera probablement chose faite grâce à leur nouvelle plaque sortie plus tôt dans l'année ! One Reality va à l'essentiel, et même si le groupe américain ne réinvente pas le metal, on sent une envie qui pousse ces musiciens à se démarquer par leur style et leurs compositions. Histoire d'en apprendre un peu plus sur groupe encore méconnu chez nous, nous avons posé quelques question à Ben Witkowski, bassiste de la formation, qui nous parle de leur jeunesse, de leur motivation et de ce qu'ils ont déjà connu depuis 2007.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Tout d'abord, Texas In July n'est pas encore très connu chez nous, en Belgique, alors pourrais-tu nous présentet ton groupe ?
Ben Witkowski: On est un groupe de metal de Lancaster en Pennsylvanie (Etat-Unis), et on vient dans vos villes pour tout déchirer.
S: Comment avez-vous trouvé ce nom de groupe, Texas In July ?
Ben: C'est très bizarre, mais très simple à expliquer. Notre guitariste Christian a voyagé au Texas en juillet... Quand on a entendu ces mots, ça nous semblait être une suite de termes tout à fait logique, alors on l'a utilisée comme nom de groupe.
S: Le groupe est formé depuis 2007, et vous avez tous entre 18 et 21 ans ! C'est très jeune pour un groupe qui vient déjà de sortir son deuxième album et bosse avec un label européen comme Nuclear Blast ! Comment gérez-vous ce succès si rapide ?
Ben: C'est quelque chose d'incroyable. Mais notre groupe prend tout au jour le jour depuis le début, et on est simplement heureux d'avoir les opportunités qu'on nous a offertes jusqu'à aujourd'hui. C'est un rêve qui se réalise.
S: Donc votre nouvel album s'intitule One Reality ! Quelle est la signification de ce titre selon vous ?
Ben: Les paroles de cet album sont toutes basées sur des faits de vie réels, et au début du processus d'écrire, je me suis pointé avec le titre de l'album avant que quoi que ce soit ne soit écrit. J'ai utilisé ce titre comme base pour tout ce que j'allais écrire sur l'album, etu peux retrouver des liens avec ce titre partout dans nos textes.
S: Y a-t-il justement un lien précis entre ce titre, la pochette du CD, et tous les thèmes abordés dans les paroles ?
Ben: Biensûr, la pochette reflette ce dont cet album parle. Elle ne capture peut-être pas tout ce qui s'y trouve, mais je pense que l'image principale se suffit à elle-même. C'est un homme qui se tient debout, les bras ouverts, on dirait qu'il attend vraiment quelque chose. On peut aussi voir à ses pieds des mains tendues, qui symbolisent des êtres qui tentent de l'attirer et de l'écarter de ce en quoi il a confiance.
S: Apparemment, tu es l'auteur principal des textes pour le groupe. Pourquoi votre chanteur ne s'occupe-t-il pas de cette partie, et d'où tires-tu ton inspiration pour écrire tes paroles ?
Ben: J'ai toujours écrit nos paroles, depuis notre premier album I Am jusqu'à celui-ci. Je ne suis pas vraiment sûr de la façon dont tout cela me vient, ça fait tellement longtemps que fait ça, maintenant. J'ai rejoint le groupe en tant que bassiste, mais je n'avais jamais touché une basse de ma vie avant cela. J'ai pris cet instrument uniquement pour jouer dans le groupe, et mon rôle au niveau de la composition est toujours resté très discret. Mais j'ai toujours des idées qui me passent par la tête, et j'ai pris l'habitude de les noter dans mon smartphone, mon portabl ou sur un papier. J'adore faire ça, vraiment. En plus, je n'écris pas moi-même mes parties de basse, c'est le job des autres gars du groupe, donc écrire les paroles, ça me permet de m'investir à mon tour dans la création.

S: Ce nouvel album a été enregistré par Zeuss (Unearth, Suicide Silence, Hatebreed, Shadows Fall,...). Pourquoi avoir choisi de bosser avec lui et pas un autre producteur ? Et comment s'est passée cette collaboration ?
Ben: Quand on s'est mis à chercher un produteur, tout ce qui concerne Zeuss, du travail qu'il a fait jusqu'à maintenant, jusqu'à son studio, nous a séduit. On avait vraiment envie que ce soit lui, donc on a foncé !
S: Vous avez déclaré que le groupe avait atteint un niveau supérieur en intensité avec des guitares plus vastes, une batterie plus technique et des structures plus travaillées. Saviez-vous à l'avance comment vous vouliez que cette musique sonne, ou avez-vous dû bosser dur sur ces nouvelles chansons pour qu'elles fonctionnent ?
Ben: Non, cet album a sonné comme ça de lui-même. On ne cherchait rien de bien spécifique, en fait, on a simplement pris du plaisir à composer ensemble. Notre ancien guitariste, Logan, venait de quitter le groupe quand on a commencé à écirre, et c'était notre principal compositeur à cette époque. Donc One Reality allait forcément sonner différemment à cause de cela.
S: Apparemment, ce nouvel album parle avant tout du fait d'aller de l'avant, de grandir en tant qu'individu, et explique l'importance de suivre la voie qu'on pense être la bonne, de façon à mettre toutes les chances de son côté pour devenir celui que l'on veut être vraiment ! Pourquoi as-tu eu envie de t'exprimer à ce sujet ? Etait-ce quelqu'un chose d'essentiel pour toi, comme une catharsis ?
Ben: Tu décris vraiment bien cet album, je suis impressionné ! Les paroles ont été écrites dans l'état d'esprit dans lequel j'étais à ce moment-là, ou un peu avant dans l'année, grâce aux choses que j'ai vécues ou que j'ai vues. Je pense que c'est toujours bon d'écrire sur base d'un sentiment profond, c'est comme ça que tu tires le meilleur de toi-même.
S: Le premier single tiré de ce disque est une chanson qui s'appelle « 1000 Lies », et vous avez récemment publié un clip pour illustrer ce morceau. C'est en fait une chanson très positive, puisque les premiers mots que l'on peut entendre sont « Finally I've become the person that I've wanted to be. »[note: « Finalement, je suis devenu celui que je voulais être. »]. Comment arrives-tu à être aussi optimiste quand la situation internationale est si mauvaise à tous les niveaux ?
Ben: Tu dois te soucier de tout ce qui arrive autour de toi, biensûr, mais ça ne sert à rien de se laisser abattre à cause ça. Pour l'instant, je vis vraiment au jour le jour, c'est la meilleur manière de vivre avec le train de vie qu'on a en tant que musicien. Rien n'est jamais garanti pour personne.
S: Alors qu'on vous n'avez que vingt ans en moyenne, vous avez déjà joué avec de très bons groupes comme August Burns Red, The Devil Wears Prada, Every Time I Die ou encore Maylene And The Sons of Disaster. Quels sont vos envies en musique pour les années à venir ? Avez-vous déjà planifié la prochaine étape de la vie de Texas In July ?
Ben: Tout s'est vraiment très bien passé jusqu'à aujourd'hui, jamais on aurait pu penser être où on est aujourd'hui. Mais pour l'instant, toute cette fin d'année et la prochaine qui arrive sont full dans nos agendas, alors on ne peut pas encore prévoir ce qui se passera après. On a bien une idée de comment on voudrait que ça se passe, mais on verra comment ça se déroule, au jour le jour, encore une fois.

S: Depuis le 2 novembre, vous tournez en Europe et même chez nous en Belgique ! Etes-vous déjà venus jouer ici, ou en Europe en général, et que penses-tu des différences entre le public américain et le public européen ? Tu préfères jouer chez vous ou à l'étranger ?
Ben: On avait déjà joué deux fois en Belgique auparavant, donc ce serait encore une fois un super concert ! Les publics sont différents partout dans le monde, il y a des endroits aux Etats-Unis où je préfère jouer par rapport à d'autres, et c'est la même chose en Europe. Il y a des hauts et des bas partout, mais quand tu as joué à un endroit, en général, tu te doutes de comment ça va se dérouler un peu plus loin.
S: Question rituelle chez Rock'N'Balls : quel serait ton Top 3 des meilleurs albums de metal de tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
Ben: Oh merde ! Il y a tellement de bons albums... je ne suis même pas sûr que je pourrais faire un choix.

One of the best new signatures of the year by Nuclear Blast is without a doubt the one who made Texas In July the label's new protégé ! The five young boys from Lancaster (Pennsylvania) didn't succeeded yet in making them renowned with their first record called I Am and released in 2009 on CI Records, but it will be probably done soon, thanks to their new album out since some months now ! One Reality goes to the point, and even if the American band doesn't reinvent metal, we can feel some desire that pushes these musicians to distance theirselves by their style and compositions. To learn some more abuot this not well-known band here in Europe, we asked some questions to Ben Witkowski, bass player of the band, who's talking to us about their youthfulness, their motivation et about what they've already lived since 2007.
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First Of All, Texas In July is not well known here in Belgium, so can you introduce your band to our readers? How did this band born?
Ben Witkowski: We are a Metal band from Lancaster Pennsylvania, coming to your city to rock.
S: How did you find the name of the band, Texas In July?
Ben: Very weird, very simple answer. Our guitar player Christian traveled to Texas In July. When we learned this, it struck us as a unique lineup of words, so we used it as our band name.
S: The band has been formed in 2007, and all you guys are just between 18 and 21! It's pretty young for a band that just released its second full-length record and works with a European label like Nuclear Blast! How do you guys deal with this so fast success?
Ben: Its an amazing thing. Our band takes things one day at a time since the very beginning, and we are just happy to have the opportunities that have been given to us thus far. It is a dream come true.
S: So your new record is called One Reality! According to the band, what's the meaning of this title?
Ben: The lyrics on the record are all based around concrete life topics, at the beginning of of the writing process I came up with the title of the record before anything was even written. I used the title to base what I was going write about on the CD. You can find meaning in this through all of the lyrics.
S: Is there a real link between the title, the artwork of the record, and the themes of songs?
Ben: The artwork on the record reflects what the record is written about for sure. Maybe not capturing all of what it is about, but I think the big picture is pretty well put. Its a man standing with his arms out, it almost looks like he is longing for something. Then the hands coming up at his feet symbolize, people trying to pull him away from what he has confidence in.
S: Apparently, you are the main lyricist of the band. Why don't your singer write the words he sings, and where do you take your inspiration to write your texts?
Ben: I have been writing our lyrics since our first record I Am, along with Uncivilized and One Reality. I'm not even too sure how this all came about, it seems so long ago when I started doing it now. I joined the band strictly to play bass, but that catch was I never played a bass before in my life. I picked the instrument up just to play in the band, and I have always had a soft spot for writing. I consistently have things on my mind that I just like to jot down on my phone/laptop/paper etc, I really enjoy doing it. Plus I don't write my bass parts or anything like that, that is up to the other guys, so it gives me a part in the writing process so I'm not just the bass player.

S: This new record has been recorded by Zeuss (Unearth, Suicide Silence, Hatebreed, Shadows Fall,...). Why did you choose to work with him and not another producer? And how did this collaboration go?
Ben: When shopping for a producer, everything about Zeus's previous work, and studio we loved. It was our gut feeling to go to him, so we went for it!
S: You told that the band has reached the next level of intensity with wider guitars, technical yet to the point drumming plus a focus on improved song structure. Did you always know how you wanted this new music to sound, or did you have to work a lot on these new tunes to make it work?
Ben: Thats just how this recorded sounded all on its own. We weren't really aiming for anything specific, we were just having fun writing music together. Also our old guitar player Logan left the band before we began writing the record, he was our main writer before he left. So One Reality was bound to sound different because of this.
S: It seems that this new record talks about the process of moving forward, moving on, and growing as an individual, explaining the importance of following the path that we believe in, in order to make the most out of life and the once chance we have to become who we truly want to be! Why did you want to express yourself about this theory? Was it something essential for your as individuals? Something like a catharsis?
Ben: You described the record very well! Im impressed. The lyrics I wrote were exactly how I was feeling at the time, or previously during the year, things that I saw first hand or went through. Its always good to write about a strong feeling in my opinion, you can get the most out of it that way.
S: The first single out of this new disc is a song called « 1000 Lies », and you recently released a video to illustre this track. This is in fact a very positive song, as some of the first words we can hear in it are « Finally I've become the person that I've wanted to be. ». How do you succeed in being so optimistic as the international current events are so bad... ?
Ben: You have to worry about these things, but there is no sense in beating yourself up about it. I live one day at a time these days, it just feels correct for the lifestyle we live. Nothing is guaranteed for anyone.
S: As you are only twenty on average, you've already toured with great bands like August Burns Red, The Devil Wears Prada, Every Time I Die or even Maylene And The Sons of Disaster. What are your musical desires for the next few years? Did you already plan the next steps for Texas In July?
Ben: Its been a great time, we never thought we would be where we are now. But as of today it looks like we may have the rest of the year and new year ruffly mapped out, nothing we can talk about now. But we have an idea of what we would like to happen, we will see what happens, day by day.

S: On November 2nd, you will be on tour in Europe, and more precisely here in our country of Belgium! Did you already come and play here, or usually in Europe, and what do you think about the difference between American and European crowd? Do you prefer to play home or in foreign countries?
Ben: We have played in Belgium twice before, so it should be an awesome show! Crowds are different all over the world, there are places I would rather play over others in the states as well as in europe. It is so up and down, but after playing certain markets, even just once, can leave with a good idea of how it is always gonna be.
S: Traditionnal question on Rock'N'Balls: what would be your Top 3 best metal albums ever, and why?
Ben: Holy smokes! There is so many good records, I'm not even sure I could choose.
